Researcher at Japan institute arrested for alleged data leak to Chinese firm
Tokyo police have arrested a Chinese researcher at a Japanese institute on suspicion of leaking advanced technology data to a Chinese company.

at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Ibaraki Prefecture is suspected of violating Japan’s Unfair Competition Prevention Act.
Police say the 59-year-old suspect emailed technology information related to fluorine compounds to the Chinese firm in 2018.
They say Quan had been researching this technology.
Police have not revealed whether the suspect admitted to the allegation.
Investigative sources say Quan,
a graduate of a Chinese university, has worked at the Japanese institute since 2002.
They say the suspect also served as a university professor and a company executive in China while working at the institute.
The alleged leak emerged after the institute told Tokyo police that Quan may not have complied with regulations regarding his simultaneous roles in China and at the institute.
Police say the leaked information involved research data
on the application of fluorine compound synthetic technology to generate an insulating gas for use in transformers and other devices.
The technology is said to be useful in tackling climate change.
