2020年12日、種子事業を手掛ける中国の湖南湘研種業に出資すると発表した。
出資比率は30.4%、出資額は10億～20億円とみられる。
中国は世界の野菜生産の5割超を占める重要市場だ。
日本で開発：野菜の種子
日本で開発した野菜の種子を中国で販売する。
また、中国の湖南湘研種業が扱うトウガラシ種子をアジアに売り込む。
湖南湘研種業：
中国最大種子会社である隆平高科集団の傘下、
トウガラシ種子では同国最大のシェアを持つ。
日本で開発されたキャベツやキュウリ、パプリカの種子を販売する。
三井物産：
2017年にイスラエルの野菜種子ベンチャーを買収。
2018年には海外展開を目指し、ジャパン・ベジタブルシードを設立

Mitsui & Co. to Invest in Chinese Vegetable Seed Company Hunan Xiangyan Seed Industry
MITSUI & CO., LTD.
signed a share purchase agreement on June 11, 2020, to acquire a 30.4% equity stake in Hunan Xiangyan Seed Industry Co., Ltd. (“Xiangyan”),
the founding body of China’s largest seed company Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. (“Longping High-Tech”) and core subsidiary of Longping High-Tech’s vegetable seed business.
China accounts for more than 50% of total vegetable production worldwide, making it the most important market in the industry.
Through this investment in Xiangyan,
the companies will further deepen their collaboration in research and development technology,
and will work with Japan Vegetable Seed Co., Ltd.—
a company established with Japanese seed companies that have been working to develop new vegetable varieties for many years—to carry out China-based development and sales of high quality, high value-added vegetable seeds including cabbage, cucumber and pepper.
Mitsui plans to utilize the sales platform of Japan Vegetable Seed to launch development and sales of Xiangyan’s pepper seeds in the Asian market.
