Update: Aegis Ashore-launched SM-3 Block IIA fails to intercept target in BMD test.

Defence Weekly

01 February 2018

A Raytheon Standard Missile (SM)-3 Block IIA interceptor failed to hit its target during a ballistic missile defence (BMD) test off the coast of Hawaii on 31 January, the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) said.

The BMD systems and tests for the Aegis Ashore systems’ SM-3 interceptors are jointly operated by the MDA and the US Navy (USN).

USN officials directed all enquiries about the test and any possible failure to the MDA, whose spokesman, Mark Wright, said only that MDA officials and USN sailors “manning the Aegis Ashore Missile Defence Test Complex [AAMDTC] conducted a live-fire missile flight test using a Standard-Missile-3 Block 2A missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, Wednesday morning”.

China may be about to commence sea trials of electromagnetic gun

Sea Platforms

London – Jane’s Defence Weekly

Photographs posted on Chinese online forums have prompted speculation that China is about to test an electromagnetic gun at sea. The images show a large turret featuring a single barrel mounted on a People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) amphibious landing ship, which appears to be configured as a trials platform for the weapon.
