6 Japanese Automakers Log Record Overseas Production for Aug.
Tokyo, Sept. 29 (Jiji Press)–Six of Japan’s eight major automakers logged record-high overseas production for August, according to the eight firms’ monthly data released Tuesday.
The six were Honda Motor Co. <7267>, Nissan Motor Co. <7201>, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. <7270>, Daihatsu Motor Co. <7262>, Mazda Motor Corp. <7261> and Suzuki Motor Corp. <7269>.
Toyota Motor Corp. <7203> and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. <7211> were the only ones that saw their overseas production decrease.
Toyota was affected by the explosion at the Chinese port of Tianjin that month. The Japanese industry leader incurred a 30 pct drop in production in China as the firm’s manufacturing bases near the port were suspended.
Of the six, Honda enjoyed brisk production in Asia including China, Nissan in the United States and Mexico, and Fuji Heavy in the United States.
Daihatsu fared well in Malaysia, and Mazda in Mexico and Thailand. At Suzuki, the weakness in China was more than offset by growth in India.
By contrast, domestic production remained sluggish on dismal sales. Total production by the eight firms slipped 4.9 pct from a year before to 568,932 units, down for the 14th consecutive month.
