Balduinは剣の達人として名高い大学生である。
マルギット女伯爵：
Balduinは、狩りの最中に落馬したマルギットを助けた。
彼女に恋をしたが、マルギットには裕福な許婚がいた。
金貸し・スカピネリ：
Balduinは貧乏で、巧くことが運ばなかった。
ある時、怪しげなる金貸し・スカピネリが現われた。
スカピネリは、Balduinに多くの金を与えた。
Balduinは、その金で
鏡に映つた自分の影：
しかし、その代償として、Balduinは「鏡に映つた自分の影」を持ち帰った。
「金貸し・スカピネリに渡した自分の影」が、いたるところに現われる。
Balduin、破滅の道：
遂に、Balduinは、哀れな最期を遂げる。
バルドゥインの近辺に現れる分身に悩まされ続ける。
最後には、バルドゥインは分身を銃で撃ち倒すが、
それはバルドゥイン自身の死を意味した。
