Hyundai Motor Group Facing Boycott in India

Hyundai Motor Group
is facing a boycott in India with regard to Kashmir-friendly SNS messages.

The messages were posted by
local agencies on Feb. 5, the Kashmir Solidarity Day.

Kashmir
is where tensions between India and Pakistan have been highest for almost a century.

Hyundai Motor Co.
has produced cars in Pakistan through partner companies such as Hyundai Nishat and has no corporation in the country.

After the messages were posted, Indians called those into question while saying the company is advocating Pakistan.

Hyundai Motor India
made an official announcement on Feb. 6 that it has contributed to the Indian market for over 25 years and the rumors are not true.

Although the messages in question have been deleted, Indian consumers are continuing to oppose.

Hyundai Motor Co. entered the Indian market in 1998, when its plant in Chennai was put into operation.

At present,
the company is the second-largest in the market behind Maruti Suzuki.

Kia entered the market in 2019 and took the fifth place in it last year.

Hyundai Motor Company’s sales volume in the market increased 19.2 percent to 505,033 in 2021, when Kia’s increased 29.2 percent to 181,583.
