Canada: 2019 new car production: falling for the third consecutive year

On January 31, 2019, we announced new car production figures for 2019.

New cars (passenger light trucks): Production volume (see table)

The number of vehicles decreased by 4.9% from the previous year to 1,946,074 units for the third consecutive year.

By segment: Production volume

Passenger cars: production decreased by 28.9%
Light trucks: production increased 7.1%,
The share of light trucks increased from 67% in the previous year to 75%.

By manufacturer: Production volume

Leading production volume: FCA

Production of light trucks “Dodge Caravan” and “Chrysler Pacifica” fell, resulting in a 4.8% decrease from the previous year.

In March 2019, FCA announced a plan to cut 1,500 jobs at its Windsor, Ontario plant.

However, in November it decided to extend employment until the first quarter of 2020 (January to March).

Maintain second place: Toyota

Production of light-duty truck “RAV4” increased by 67.1% to 353,374 units.

On the other hand, the transfer of passenger car “Corolla” production to the United States resulted in a 5.9% decrease in total production.

Maintains third place: Honda

Production of the Civic passenger car and the CR-V light truck dropped, resulting in a 5.8% decrease.
