U.S. power company Scanner Electric Power Co. stopped construction on July 31 for the VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant under construction in South Carolina due to the cost jump. As a result, the expectation for “nuclear renaissance” to reevaluate nuclear power generation in the United States has collapsed. Toshiba’s US nuclear subsidiary Westinghouse Electric (WH), the scanner ordered the VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant, filed for application of Article 11 of the federal bankruptcy law in March. One reason was that in addition to the VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant, construction costs of Georgia nuclear power plants ordered from Southern electric power company of the U.S. electric power company significantly exceeded the budget.
