Tesla: Recall 160,000 units due to defective semiconductor: eMMC / NAND flash memory

Tesla: Recall 160,000 units due to defective semiconductor: eMMC / NAND flash memory

-NHTSA requests a recall from Tesla-

Office of Defects Investigation (ODI):

A letter was sent to Tesla executives pointing out the cause of the problem.

Pointed out as the cause of the problem:

Model S and Model X IVIs have a cause of failure.

It is an “eMMC compatible NAND flash memory” in the “MCU (Media Control Unit)”.

P / E cycle (number of rewrites) is 3000 times,
While repeating the rewriting of data,
The life (upper limit of rewriting) expires in 5 to 6 years.
It is pointed out that this life will lead to a malfunction of the MCU.

MCU malfunction:

Since the MCU is an IVI, it does not directly affect the “running / turning / stopping” of a car.

However, if there is a problem with the MCU, “safety will be hindered.”

Rear view camera:

It is pointed out that the driver will not be able to see the image from the rear view camera.

Tesla body control:

Tesla controls almost all of the vehicle’s body through the touch panel display on the MCU.

Air conditioning system (HVAC) operation:

The air conditioner does not have a dedicated physical button and is operated through the display.

If the MCU is stuck, the air conditioning system (HVAC) cannot be operated.

It is pointed out that the risk of accidents increases because the windshield cannot be defrosted or defrosted.

Due to a malfunction of the MCU

ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) and
With alerts when changing direction, etc.
Increases the risk of accidents.
The blinker sounds and warning sounds for the driver will no longer sound.
