Japan’s ATLA is a prototype built by the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency from 2021 to 2024,

Japan’s self-propelled anti-drone intercept system:

A high-power laser is irradiated on the target flying object and shot down.

1. All the functions necessary for detection, targeting, and drone countermeasures are concentrated in one JSDF vehicle.

2. It can move autonomously on ordinary roads, highways, and rough terrain.

Search and targeting methods:

1. The attached radar searches for approaching drones from all directions, 360 degrees.

2. After detection, the beam director on top of the vehicle begins tracking the target.

Shooting down with auto-lock-on:

1. Aim at the target and lock on.

2. The operator makes a final check from the rear of the vehicle and irradiates the laser.

It continuously tracks the target drone while irradiating it with a high-power laser.

Vehicle-mounted high-power laser demonstration systems:(ATLA Official Site):

All the features required for counter-drone using high-energy laser are mounted on a single Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) vehicle.

The vehicle has excellent maneuverability and is able to be driven on public roads, highways and off-road.

After maneuvering, the system starts surveillance and targeting.

A drone detection radar is used to search for approaching drones from all directions.

Once a drone is detected, a beam director on the top of the vehicle starts to track the drone.

When the target is locked on, operators in the shelter confirm the target and start to shoot laser.

The system is able to destroy the drone by continuously tracking the target and shooting laser.
