Full Operation of Japanese GPS “Michibiki” Starts

Tokyo, Nov. 1 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s Cabinet Office started on Thursday the full operation of the “Michibiki” positioning satellite network, seen as the Japanese version of the U.S. Global Positioning System.

The Michibiki network will reduce positioning errors to as small as one meter.

Using a dedicated receiver, locations can be confirmed with accuracy of a few centimeters.

It is expected to be used for a variety of purposes, including automated driving, farming and delivering goods with drones.

After the first Michibiki satellite was sent into orbit in 2010, the current four-unit network was established in October last year and around-the-clock test operations have since been conducted.

The government plans to have three more satellites join the network by March 2023, with a view to creating a 2-trillion-yen market.
