JAXA: Spacecraft/Docking video wireless LAN transmission: HTV9/ISS (WLD)

JAXA: Spacecraft/Docking video wireless LAN transmission: HTV9/ISS (WLD)

June 9, 2020

Space Station Supply Vehicle (HTV):

On May 25, 2020, we succeeded in transmitting the spacecraft HTV9/ISS/docking video in the phase of approaching the International Space Station (ISS).

Images from the camera mounted on the “Kotonotori” Unit 9 were transmitted to the ISS using WLAN (wireless LAN).

Successful wireless LAN transmission between spacecraft” is the first in the world.

Demonstration Experiment Wild: (Wireless LAN Demonstration: WLD)

To acquire future automatic docking technology,
In order for the ISS/astronaut to understand the condition of the spacecraft,
Video recording of ISS (approaching and moving away) with a camera mounted on a spacecraft,
It is transmitted in real time to the ISS using wireless LAN.

This demonstration:

Near 250m below the ISS:

Established wireless LAN communication with ISS (near 600m below ISS)

Then stable for about 4 hours:

We were able to continue transmitting the images of the camera onboard the Kounotori Unit 9 to the ISS.

Near 30m below the ISS:

Wireless LAN access point switching demonstration test on the ISS side.

Confirmed that the JAXA system (attached to the tip of the robot arm of “Kibo”) can be switched to the NASA ISS system normally.

WLD mission:

This time, we achieved the purpose of WLAN (wireless LAN) experiment.

From now on, WLAN (wireless LAN) will also be used in the automatic docking experiment of the new Space Station Replenisher (HTV-X) Unit 2.
