Nissan: Molding body panels without molds: Develop tech for ‘face-to-face dieless molding’
2019/10/02
Nissan Motor:
On October 2nd, announced that we developed the ‘opposite dieless molding’ technology.
This technology forms body panels without using molds.
Opposite dieless molding ‘: Outline explanation
This method is “a method of forming while linking opposing tools together.
Until now, it was considered difficult to put into practical use.
In the future, Nissan will consider commercializing this technology with after-service parts and repair parts for older cars.
This is an “incremental molding” technology in which a robot with a rod-shaped tool is formed by gradually deforming the panel.
By placing molding tools on the opposite side, complex shapes can be molded.

Body panel for mass-produced vehicles
This is done by pressing using a mold that requires a large investment and a long development period.
For large parts such as bonnets, the development period of the mold is about one year, and the cost is tens of millions of yen. The processing also requires a huge press machine.
Technology developed by Nissan
Basically, it can be formed with a forming tool, robot and jig.
Machining requires 3D data of the target part, and the time to production including its production is only 3 days to 4 weeks.
The cost of jigs and data production ranges from several hundred thousand to one million yen.
