South Africa (NAAMSA): New car sales in 2019: decreased for 2 years, production increased for 3 years

South African Automobile Manufacturers Association (NAAMSA): (See Table 1)
New car sales in 2019 decreased by 2.8% to 536,611 units for the second consecutive year, due to the effects of the economic slowdown and other factors.
NAAMSA also forecasted sales to fall 2.2% in 2020 following the economic downturn in South Africa (see article on March 10, 2020).
By Manufacturer: Passenger Car Sales
VW Group: 83,262 units, flat year on year
Toyota: 63,700 units (down 9.2% year-on-year)
Hyundai: Continued at 30,269 units (down 6.3%),
The ranking of the top three companies was the same as last year.
Ford, fourth place last year, fell 5.7%
Renault (+ 6.7%) overtook fifth place.
Japanese companies:
Nissan sold 19,915 units (down 10.9% year-on-year)
Mazda sold 14,498 units (down 13.3%),
Honda struggled with 5,557 units (down 26.2%) from the previous year.
Among them, Suzuki’s sales increased 26.5% to 14,867 units, a significant increase in sales volume as in the previous year.
2019 production: (See Table 2)
This was the third consecutive year of increase of 611,983 units, a 3.6% increase from the previous year, a record high.
