Mexico (INEGI): Auto production in 2019, down 4.1% : Exports decreased for the first time in 10 years

National Institute of Statistical Geographic Information (INEGI): (See Table 1)

On January 8, Mexico released 2019 Automobile Production, Export and Sales Statistics (excluding large buses and trucks).

Exports: down 3.4% year-on-year, the lowest since 2009.
Production: Declined 4.1% year-on-year to 3.75841 units.
Domestic sales: 7.7% decrease year on year, for the third consecutive year.

The domestic market is still not lively.

By company: Production volume: (See Table 2)

1st place: General Motors (GM), up 3.6% year-on-year

2nd place: Nissan, down 11.8% year on year

Contrary to the previous year, the results were contrasting.

GM:

The company is switching production of small cars for the domestic market to China.

Consolidate production in Mexico into SUVs and pickup trucks, which are strong in the US market.

The increase was led by an increase in exports to the United States.

Nissan:

Production models are mainly compact sedans.

The sluggish sales of sedans in the US market were impacted by sluggish domestic sales.

Honda:

Production has increased significantly.

The fall in production in the previous year due to the flood damage at the Celaya plant that occurred at the end of June 2018.

Mazda:

Production decreased significantly, down 38.6% from the previous year.

The company struggled to launch production of the new Mazda 3, which was introduced at the beginning of the year.

The sluggish sales of Mazda3 in the US market had an effect.

Overall, sales fell 4.1% year-on-year.

Decrease in exports for the first time in 10 years affected.
In terms of exports, exports to the US increased 2.9%, led by SUVs.
Exports to other major countries decreased throughout.

By Destination: Exports

As a result, 79.3% of all exports went to the United States, increasing dependence on the United States by 4.9 points from the previous year.

In 2019, exports declined in almost all destinations except the United States (Latin America, Europe, Asia, etc.)

The factors differ depending on the destination.

Destinations: Influencing Factors

Latin America: Argentina’s economy is sluggish. The suspension of Ford’s exports to Brazil affected.
For Europe: The sluggish production of Mazda, which has a high ratio for Europe, has an impact.
For Asia: The end of production of The Beetle (VW: August 2019) was affected.

GM / Ford / Toyota / Honda exports more than 90% to North America.
Nissan / Kia is mainly in the Americas. There are many exports to North America and Latin America.
VW / Mazda is diversified. The weight of exports to Europe is relatively high.
