Osaka Univ: Cockroaches save lives in the event of a disaster: Heat source search

-Study using the high running ability of insects-

Osaka University
Professor Keisuke Morishima

The research group has succeeded in autonomously controlling cockroaches and guiding them to heat sources.

A microcomputer carried by a cockroach controls the rotation and forward movement on the spot.

In the experiment, cockroaches arrived in a cup of hot water.

Autonomous control of cockroaches:

It will be a heat source search system that utilizes the high running ability of insects.

The aim is to “establish technology to search for people left behind under debris in the event of a disaster.”

Madagascar hissing cockroach:

Madagascar hissing cockroach that lives in Madagascar.

An electrode is pierced into the tactile sensation of a cockroach and the butt, and it is electrically stimulated.
When the tactile sensation is stimulated, it rotates in the opposite direction to the stimulated side on the spot.
Also, if you stimulate your buttocks, you will move forward to escape from the stimulation.
Combine this stimulus to drive the cockroach to its target.

Developed control module:

Developed a control module weighing 6.3 grams so that cockroaches can carry it on their backs.

Equipped with thermography in addition to a built-in wireless microcomputer and battery.

“When the heat source comes into view, it turns in that direction and moves forward.”

After sensing, it is electrically stimulated for 0.1 seconds and waits for 0.4 seconds repeatedly.

“Cyber Cockroach” plan for disaster relief

“Cyber Roach” Plan:

Introducing the “Cyber Roach” plan.

Remotely control cockroaches with a small rucksack equipped with a microchip.

Have them search under the rubble in the event of a disaster.
