COVID-19: New car sales in China (CAAM) in May: Demand recovery

China Automobile Manufacturers Association (CAAM):

On June 11, announced the production and sales volume of new vehicles in China in May.

Production volume:

May year-on-year increase of 18.2% to 2,187,000 units
Cumulative production volume from January to May decreased by 24.1% from the previous year to 7,787,000 units
Compared to the January-April period, the rate of decrease narrowed by 9.3 percentage points, showing a recovery trend.

New vehicle sales:

New vehicle sales in May increased by 14.5% year-on-year to 2,194,000 units, continuing to increase in April.

Japanese car sales: (Attachment table 1)

Chinese subsidiary of a major Japanese manufacturer announced in the first week of June.

According to the new car sales bulletin in China in May,

Toyota

It was 26.6% year-on-year increase to 166,300 units for the second consecutive month.

Nissan Motor

It increased by 6.7% to 131,600 units, recovering from the previous month’s increase for 3 consecutive months.

Honda

It was a slight decrease of 1.73% to 134,230 units.

Guangdong: January-April automobile production (Attachment Figure 2)

It has recovered from March, with February as the bottom.

Guangdong is the largest automobile production center in China.

Guangdong Provincial Statistics Bureau announced on June 8th.

Sales decreased 33.2% year on year to 636,100 units.

Guangdong Province/Vehicle production ratio is about 30% of China’s total (2.11,556 units).

Monthly growth rate:

February: Bottom 88.2% year-on-year decrease
March: 46.5% decrease compared to the same month the year before,
April: Recovery by 1.1% year-on-year,

GAC Toyota: (Attachment Table 2)

Guangdong largest/Guangzhou Automobile Group announced a preliminary report on June 9.

In May, production volume increased by 2.9% year-on-year and sales volume increased by 4.1%, continuing to be positive from April.

GAC Fiat Chrysler:

GAC Fiat Chrysler, which is a joint venture with Fiat Chrysler, decreased by double digits from April.

GAC Mitsubishi Motors:

GAC Mitsubishi Motors, which is a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors, also saw a double-digit decrease following April.
