China (CAAM): April passenger car sales decline-US car share weak

China Automotive Industry Association (CAAM):

In April, the company announced 1.98 million vehicles sold, down 14.6% from the same month last year.

Total sales volume: Breakdown

Passenger cars: approximately 1,570,000 units (down 17.7%)

Commercial vehicles: about 410,000 units (0.1% increase)

In March, the decline in sales decreased and it was thought that the bottom hit.

However, it dropped sharply again in April.

In particular, sluggish sales of US passenger cars are noticeable (see Regional Analysis Report dated January 28, 2019).

US cars: Sales share (see figure)

We have had a 10% sales share since 2016.

However, it has been less than 10% since November 2018, and has been in the 8% range.

US vehicles: By manufacturer (sold in January-April 2019)

GM: 552,000 units (down 17%)

Ford: 68,916 vehicles (60% decrease)

FCA: 26,623 units (45% decrease)

The decline in US car share is significantly lower than the market average.

US cars: The reasons for the downturn

US manufacturers are not able to fully introduce new models into the Chinese market.
