US: 2Q new car sales, down 33.7% year on year: Motor Intelligence announced

Announcement of Motor Intelligence (July 1st)

The number of new vehicles sold in the United States in the second quarter of 2020 (April to June) is

2,938,744 units, a decrease of 33.7% from the previous year (see attached table 1)

The rate of decrease is the largest since the first quarter of 2009 (38.4% decrease) after the Lehman shock.

Sales by department:

690,974 passenger cars, down 47.0% year on year,
Light trucks decreased by 28.2% to 2,247,770 units.
Passenger car sales:

The minimum since 1980 when the data can be confirmed,

The number of SUVs decreased for the second consecutive period, and the number of decrease was the largest by category.

In particular, fleet sales have dropped significantly.

After March:

Limited sales activities at own stores,
Opportunities for individual consumers to buy new cars have been lost.
The decline in tourism demand also affected the decline in rental car users.
In May:

Rent-a-car, Hertz and Advantage Rent-a-car companies apply for Article 11 of the Bankruptcy Law
A slump in the rental car industry caused fleet sales to fall, accounting for 15-20% of total sales.
Automotive-related research company ALG:

Second-quarter industry average fleet sales fell significantly by 73.2% year-on-year.

By major manufacturer:

Both decreased by double digits compared to the same period of the previous year, with Nissan’s decrease by 49.5% (see attached table 2).
