COVID-19: Urinalysis predicts aggravation: L-FABP/protein

COVID-19: Urinalysis predicts aggravation: L-FABP/protein

National Center for International Medical Research:

A group of the National Center for Global Health and Medicine announced the research result that “a urine test can predict whether or not a new coronavirus will make the disease worse.”

Urinalysis predicts aggravation:

A test for a specific protein in urine.

In the future, we will increase the number of patients and carry out research toward practical application.

L-FABP/Protein:

L-FABP/protein is a property that a large amount of it is produced in urine when oxygen in the body decreases.

Forty-one patients initially infected with COVID-19 who were initially mild.

We investigated the relationship between the amount of L-FABP in patients and changes in symptoms.

Result of investigation:

Of the 13 people who had higher than normal levels of this protein,

Eight people had worsening symptoms one week later,
Two of them became ill with the need for a ventilator.
On the other hand, of the 28 people with normal protein levels,

One had worse symptoms,
No one was seriously ill.
National Center for Global Health and Medicine: Dr. Katagiri

It is thought that this protein responds to the hypoxic state of the organs, which leads to aggravation.
