COVID-19: Shimadzu to corona test with exhaled breath: exhaled omics technology

Shimadzu and Tohoku University:

On October 16th, we developed a technology that can determine the presence or absence of infection with the new coronavirus from exhaled breath.

The components contained in the exhaled breath are collected in about 5 minutes and analyzed with a Shimadzu analyzer.

Judgment technology by exhalation:

There is less stress on the patient than the method of collecting a sample from the back of the nose.
By the time you get the result. It only takes one hour.
Advance clinical research and aim for early commercialization.

Collection of exhaled fine particles “aerosol”:

Using a device that collects fine particles “aerosol” contained in exhaled breath, analysis is performed with a precision analyzer called a mass spectrometer.

In addition to determining the presence or absence of new corona infection
It can also analyze viral proteins, etc.
The risk of aggravation and the presence or absence of other infectious diseases
It can be judged.

In the future, Shimadzu and Tohoku University will proceed with clinical research and aim to apply for medical devices at an early stage.

[SHIMADZU] Developed a new corona test method using breath

-Development of futuristic breath medical care by breath omics-

Tohoku University and Shimadzu Corporation:

The naturally exhaled breath (exhalation) is used as a sample.

Succeeded in developing a new coronavirus test method using “breath omics”.

Breath Omics:

It is “state-of-the-art technology for analyzing viruses, proteins and metabolites derived from living organisms” that exist in exhaled breath.

In the future, not to mention measures against the new corona

Personalized medicine,
Remote / home health checkup,
Applied to diagnosis / treatment / prevention of pre-illness,
We will develop innovative breath medical care.
