COVID-19: Shimadzu, regular inspection of sewage: “Kyoto model”

“Shimadzu Techno Research”:

Regularly inspect drainage, such as in facilities for the elderly.

Early detection of new coronavirus-infected persons!

The company announced on March 26 that it has developed a monitoring system “Kyoto model”.

Monitoring system:

If the virus is detected in the wastewater, a PCR test will identify positive individuals and prevent the development of clusters (infected population).

After a demonstration experiment in Kyoto city, we aim for full-scale development at the end of April.

Inspection by sewage:

In the inspection by sewage,

It can be identified if there is an infected person at a rate of 1 in 10,000.
The outbreak situation can be evaluated at once.
In addition, the virus is present in feces even before the onset.
It has the advantage of catching signs of epidemics at an early stage.

Shimadzu is currently entrusted with PCR tests for sewage and saliva.

Kyoto model:

The Kyoto model combines the two.

Samples are collected from the wastewater of the target facility / toilet.
Regular inspections are conducted about once a week.
If a positive reaction is obtained, a saliva test is performed on facility staff and users to identify the infected person.
