APB: KHI・AUV equipped with all-resin batteries-Start of verification test

APB: Kawasaki Heavy Industries

Features an increased energy density, enabling long-term driving

“Inquiries from Japan and overseas”-President Horie

APB All Resin Battery:

Kawasaki Heavy Industries is developing an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV),

Products from APB (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), a manufacturer of all resin batteries, were installed.

APB and its parent company Sanyo Kasei Co., Ltd. announced on July 20 that they have begun a demonstration test.

Features of all-resin battery:

Of current lithium-ion batteries

“Metal electrodes and liquid electrolytes, which are basic materials,”
The feature is that it has been replaced with resin to increase the energy density.
The battery capacity can be expanded in a limited space, enabling longer driving hours.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries will be APB’s first customer.

APB:

Established in 2018 by President Hideaki Horie, who was involved in the battery development of Nissan’s EV “Leaf”.

In March this year

Obayashi Gumi
Yokogawa Electric,
Teijin, etc.
It aims to mass-produce 21 years by raising 8 billion yen from a corporate group.

Sanyo Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.

Affiliate company APB Co., Ltd. has installed the next-generation lithium-ion battery “all-resin battery” in Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ AUV.

Verification test:

We would like to inform you that we have started the “demonstration test”.

The demonstration test will start in July 2020, and the AUV power source developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries will be equipped with a water pressure resistant all-resin battery jointly developed by APB and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

AUV all resin battery:

It is manufactured for the purpose of maintenance and inspection of undersea equipment by applying submarine related technology.

It is necessary to work underwater for a long time in a harsh environment such as the deep sea.

Bipolar stacked type:

The all-resin battery developed and manufactured by APB is a bipolar stacked type that requires a small number of parts.

As it is made of resin,
Since it is possible to increase the size of the cell,
It is characterized by high energy density when laminated.

Use all resin batteries for AUV:

By utilizing all-resin batteries for AUV

Within the limited space inside the craft
Expand the battery capacity that can be installed,
You can run for a longer time.

  1. All resin batteries are water pressure resistant:
  2. In addition, the batteries used for AUVs must withstand the high water pressure environment on the seabed.
  3. We have already confirmed that all resin batteries have water pressure resistance.

This time, we have shifted to a verification test by mounting it on an AUV.

[About all resin batteries]

The all-resin battery is a bipolar laminated lithium-ion battery.

Using the resin newly developed by Sanyo Kasei,
Resin coating on the active material,
By applying to the resin current collector
Forming the electrodes.

Unique manufacturing process:

Shorter process than conventional lithium-ion batteries,
Realized reduction of manufacturing cost and lead time,
Achieves high reliability and energy density during abnormal times.

It is a bipolar laminated type that requires a small number of parts, and because it is made of resin, it is easy to thicken the electrode film.
