Kyocera: Entering EV batteries by 2025: 24M Technologies

-What is the “clay type” to be developed? –

January 28, 2022

Kyocera:

We are considering entering the EV drive storage battery market by 2025.

Expanding clay type L iB to EV:

“Clay-type lithium-ion storage battery developed as a stationary battery for housing” will be deployed in-vehicle.

Utilizing external production consignment:

Utilize external production consignment by around 2025.

Double the production capacity and reduce the manufacturing cost.

In-vehicle batteries are likely to become one of the core businesses that drive growth.

Kyocera clay type battery:

2020,
Started production of the world’s first clay type battery.

Commercialized as an in-house brand residential stationary battery.

2021,
At the smart factory in the Yasu factory,

Production of clay-type batteries with a production capacity of 200 MW / year has started.

Achievements of storage batteries for housing:

Currently, it does not reach the annual production of 20,000 units with full capacity.

Entering the phase of making a track record as a stationary storage battery for housing.

Entry into in-vehicle batteries:

Kyocera is promoting “development of next-generation clay type with increased energy density” for in-vehicle batteries.

We are also considering “development of cells for drones if the density is increased and the size is reduced.”

Plan to halve installation cost:

2019,
The introduction cost is 190,000 yen per 1kw including the construction cost.

2025,
The introduction cost is planned to be halved to 90,000 yen in 2013.

What is a clay battery?

A clay-like structure in which an electrolyte is kneaded into the electrodes.

It is safer than conventional lithium-ion batteries that use an electrolytic solution.

Compared to conventional liquid batteries:

It is highly safe because it is filled with an electrolytic solution, and it does not easily ignite even if it is deformed by an impact.

No binder required for electrodes:

The structure is simple and the manufacturing cost is low.

The thickness of the electrodes can also be increased 3-5 times as much as the conventional one.
The feature is that the manufacturing process can be simplified.

US venture
24M Technologies

It was jointly developed with 24M Technologies and commercialized by Kyocera for the first time in the world.
