Asahi Kasei: Mid-wavelength ultraviolet (UVB) semiconductor laser: Medical and bioscience fields
Meijo University / Mie University / Asahi Kasei
Meijo University / Mie University / Asahi Kasei jointly invented the world’s first “middle wavelength ultraviolet (UV-B wavelength region) semiconductor laser”.
Medium wavelength ultraviolet: semiconductor laser
Laser light is the ultimate light source whose wavelength and phase * 1) are controlled, unlike light that exists in nature such as LEDs and sunlight.
Among the devices that generate laser light, semiconductor lasers have excellent performance such as small size, high efficiency, and low power consumption.
Until now, infrared, red, green, and blue lasers have been commercialized and implemented in society.
“Realization of a semiconductor laser with a shorter wavelength and a larger energy and a medium wavelength ultraviolet light” was strongly desired.
Type of UV:
Long wavelength ultraviolet (UV-A: 380-320nm)
Already, Meijo University / Hamamatsu Photonics has developed a semiconductor laser in the long wavelength ultraviolet region.
Short wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C: 280 nm or less)
Asahi Kasei / Nagoya University has already realized a semiconductor laser in the short wavelength ultraviolet region.
Medium wavelength ultraviolet light (UV-B: 320-280 nm)
This time, we have realized a semiconductor laser in the mid-wavelength ultraviolet region.
Mid-wavelength ultraviolet region: Semiconductor laser: Application fields

Chemistry
Sterilization
It can be applied in many fields such as industrial use.
In particular, medium-wavelength ultraviolet light is effective for living organisms.
DNA sequencer
Skin treatment etc.
New applications that cannot be achieved in other wavelength ranges can be expected.
