Shimizu Corporation: Successful defoliant-contaminated soil purification in Vietnam: Dioxin contamination

2020.12.08

Shimizu Corporation:

Vietnam Environmental Treatment Technology Center (CTET):

With the approval of the Defense Ministry of Vietnam, we verified the effectiveness of the technology for cleaning and treating dioxin-contaminated soil derived from defoliants.

Conducted twice in 2019 and 2020 at Bien Hoa Air Force Base in Dong Nai Province.

Announcement of cleaning treatment results:

Today, we are announcing the results at a hotel in Hanoi, inviting government officials from Vietnam and the United States.

Shimizu Corporation’s contaminated soil cleaning technology:

It was developed and put into practical use by Shimizu Corporation.

We have a track record of processing millions of tons in Japan.

Dioxin Contaminated Soil Purification Project:

We verified the effectiveness of the technology for highly contaminated soil.

A soil cleaning plant to be actually used is set up in Bien Hoa Air Force Base.

Approximately 900 tons of contaminated soil was washed and treated by a demonstration experiment.

Installation plant:

Operates 8 hours a day 30,000-37,500 m3 / year,

16 hours a day operation 65,000-80,000m3 / year

Soil cleaning treatment is possible.

Our cleaning technology utilizes “the characteristic that pollutants adhere to the fine particles of soil”.

Bien Hoa Airport Soil:

Since it contains 30-35% of fine particles, 65% -70% of soil can be reused.

Hazardous substances removed together with the fine particles are separately detoxified by thermal decomposition treatment.

In the demonstration experiment:

For example, for soil with a dioxin concentration of 3,500 ppt, we were able to reduce it to 100 ppt or less (removal rate of 95% or more).
