NEC :Developed superconducting qubit 20 years ago: Received Asahi Prize

Development of “superconducting qubit”:

The heart of a quantum computer The basic element called “superconducting qubit” was developed for the first time in the world in 1999.

NEC Basic Research Laboratories:

At that time, two people were researchers at NEC’s Basic Research Laboratory in Tsukuba.

It is a great achievement of Mr. Jaw-Shen Tsai (68) and Mr. Yasunobu Nakamura (52).

It’s been 20 years since Google announced it.

Don’t forget to note that this result is based on Japan Hi-tech.

Foundation and realization of quantum computer

IT giant Google:

In the fall of 2019, Google, a major US IT company, announced that “the power of quantum computers has far exceeded existing supercomputers.”

First realized 20 years ago:

Mr. Tsai and Mr. Nakamura first realized 20 years ago the important foundation that leads to this groundbreaking result.

Received the Asahi Prize this time:

The Asahi Shimbun will present Tsai and Nakamura with this year’s Asahi Prize.

It was announced in today’s morning edition (January 1st).

Professor Jaw-Shen Tsai (68), RIKEN, Tokyo University of Science

Professor Yasunobu Nakamura, RIKEN, The University of Tokyo (52)

In 1999, when he was a researcher at NEC Research Laboratory, he succeeded in developing the world’s first superconducting qubit.

Superconducting qubit:

Google used an advanced version of this superconducting qubit that they created.

Google says that 53 pieces were lined up and a special calculation that would take 10,000 years with the latest supercomputer was completed in just 200 seconds.

Tsai Zhao Shen:

Born in Taipei in 1952.
Graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975.
In 1983, he received his PhD from NY State University in the United States and joined NEC.
2015 Professor of Tokyo University of Science.
He is also the team leader of RIKEN.

Nakamura Yasunobu:

Born in Osaka in 1968.
Graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo in 1990.
Completed the master’s degree at the same graduate school in 1992 and joined NEC.
2012 Professor at the University of Tokyo.
He is also a group director at RIKEN.
