JAXA: Rotating Detonation Engine: Using shock waves as thrust

-New engine technology World’s first space demonstration-

JAXA:

At 5:30 am on July 27, “S520-31” was launched from the Uchinoura Space Center.

Equipped with “detonation engine”:

The latest technology that converts the shock wave generated by the reaction of methane and oxygen into thrust.

Demonstration in outer space:

The technology called “detonation engine” was demonstrated in outer space for the first time in the world.

Combusting a mixed gas of methane and oxygen,
A shock wave that expands at a speed of 2 km / s,
Engine technology that turns into thrust,
Tested in outer space for the first time in the world.

The capsule containing the memory of the experimental data was dropped to the sea and recovered by helicopter.

60 years since the conception: A rocket that flies with the energy of “explosion”

-I saw the path to practical use-

-Infinite loop of detonation wave-

Rotating Detonation Engine: RDE

In RDE, hydrogen and oxygen are sent into the combustion chamber.

It is a mechanism that induces detonation by sending a shock wave into the combustion chamber using a thin tube.

Detonation mechanism:

Hydrogen and oxygen are sent from dozens of fuel injectors to the front of the engine.

As the pressure wave travels through the combustion chamber, it collides with more hydrogen and oxygen.

A detonation wave (combustion wave accompanied by a shock wave) collides with the fuel and oxidizer that have just been sent.

The temperature and pressure of the gaseous fuel rise sharply.

When the gas burns, a flame is released and ejected from the rocket engine.
