JAXA: Developed synthetic aperture radar (SAR): Imaging in orbit

JAXA / Al Wet Technology

JAXA and Al-Wet Technology (AT) have jointly developed a device to orbit synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data onboard a satellite.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR):

This device rewrites the data processing that was conventionally performed by a computer on the ground to an algorithm suitable for a high-speed processing FPGA (field programmable gate array).

The use of firmware has made it the world’s first satellite-mounted device.

SAR features:

As a result, SAR observation data can be processed near-real-time in orbiting satellites.
Significantly reduces the amount of downlink from satellites.
Expectations are growing for needs, such as “Utilization for sea area observation and vessel movement monitoring.”
