Facebook: New subsea optical cable to North Atlantic: NEC adopted

Facebook:

The NEC cable will be used for the first time in the world.

Performance of new optical cable:

That’s equivalent to 13,300 gigabytes of 4.7 gigabytes of DVD per second.

It is a speed that 5 million people can communicate at 100 Mbps at the same time.

NEC:

NEC has newly developed the world’s largest capacity optical fiber cable.

1.5 times the conventional submarine optical cable.

It has a transmission capacity of 0.5 petabits (0.5 Pbps) per second.

Submarine cable share:

Submarine cable giants

US subcom,
France Alcatel Submarine Networks,
NEC Japan,

Three companies account for 90% of the world market share.

NEC to build a transatlantic cable:

October 8, 2021

NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701)

today announced that it has been contracted by Facebook to build an ultra-high performance transatlantic subsea fiber-optic cable connecting the USA and Europe.

Until recently,
subsea cable was composed of 16 fiber pairs at most, but today, by using NEC’s newly developed 24 fiber pair cable and repeaters (*1),

a system can deliver a maximum transmission capacity of a half Petabit per second,

the highest to date for a long distance repeatered optical subsea cable system (*2).

International data usage
across the Atlantic is expected to expand twenty-fold in the 15 years between 2021 and 2035 (*3).

The region
ranks among the highest growth geographies for data traffic demand, bringing ever-greater demands to reduce the cost per bit on subsea cable networks.
