5G wireless communication experiment on Tokaido Shinkansen

2019 September 30

NTT DoCoMo / JR Tokai

NTT DoCoMo and JR Tokai conducted a wireless communication experiment using the 5th generation mobile communication system (hereinafter “5G”) as part of a study to realize a more comfortable mobile communication environment on the Tokaido Shinkansen. .

In order to achieve 5G wireless communication with railway cars running at high speeds, technologies such as the location of base stations and the ability to follow mobile terminals in the actual driving environment, the influence of surrounding shielding in the actual usage scene of the customer, etc.

There were a lot of items to be verified.

5G technical verification: 5G ground base station / 5G mobile terminal

For 5G technical verification,

  1. 5G base station for experiment (ground base station: set up along the Tokaido Shinkansen),
  2. With a 5G mobile terminal for experiments (Mobile terminal: N700S installed in the confirmation test vehicle)”

We conducted 5G wireless communication experiments and succeeded in experiments during high-speed driving.

This is the world’s first successful 5G wireless communication experiment between a high-speed train traveling at 200 km / h and above and the ground.

Collect important data for full-scale use of 5G communication services in future high-speed rail cars.

5G wireless communication: Outline of the experiment

(1) Experiment period August 24 (Sat)-September 7 (Sat), 2019
(2) Experiment place Shizuoka Prefecture Fuji City (between Mishima Station and Shin-Fuji Station)
(3) Frequency band used 28 GHz band
(4) Details of the experiment (See Attachment 1 for the experimental system configuration)

① 5G wireless data transmission experiment

・ Ultra-high-speed transmission that makes full use of the functions of both ground base stations and mobile terminals (beamforming and beam following functions)
Continuous handover that switches the ground base stations (three locations) to which the mobile terminal is connected sequentially

② 5G wireless video transmission experiment

・ 5G high-speed download distribution of ultra-high-definition 8K video from the ground base station to mobile terminals
・ 5G live broadcast from the mobile terminal to the ground base station using the 4K camera (installed in the N700S test vehicle)

 Experimental result

(1) Train running speed 283 km / h
(2) Results by experiment

Each successful experiment is the first in the world as a 5G experiment on a high-speed railway.

① 5G wireless data transmission experiment
・ Maximum data transmission rate: 1.0 Gbps or more [Success]
・ Between ground base stations: Continuous handover [Success]

② 5G wireless video transmission experiment
・ High-speed download distribution of 8K video content [Success]
・ Live broadcast of 4K car window images [Success]
