KDDI: Underwater data communication: Blue LED optical wireless
KDDI Research Institute:
On October 2, a blue LED optical wireless communication technology demonstration experiment was conducted along the coast of Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Underwater data communication:
Wireless transmission using sound waves is common in water, but the transmission speed is limited.
In other words, it is not suitable for real-time communication of data with a large amount of information.
KDDI R & D Laboratories is developing LED optical wireless communication technology that enables wireless communication with low latency and large capacity even under water.
This experiment: Using a smartphone in the sea
Using a blue LED optical wireless communication device, it was confirmed that “optical wireless communication is possible from the sea level to a depth of 5 meters”.
Using a waterproof underwater smartphone,
Distribution of live video from the sea to the land
SNS distribution from land to smartphones in the sea was succeeded.
This is the world’s first “demonstration experiment of connecting a smartphone to an optical wireless network from underwater”.
Details of this experiment: CEATEC 2019
Exhibited at the booth of the ALAN consortium at CEATEC 2019, which will be held at Makuhari Messe from October 15th to October 18th.
