NTT:JAXA、ultra-high-speed communications with sat:Innovative Optical、Wireless Network
NTT / Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
On November 5, 2019, the company announced that it would start joint development of wireless communication technology with spacecraft and satellites.
NTT’s optical and wireless network technology “IOWN (Innovative Optical & Wireless Network)”
JAXA’s “Spacecraft System Construction Technology”
Combined to realize new social infrastructure.
In the future, we will provide a high-speed, high-capacity communication infrastructure that is resistant to disasters, and establish an ecosystem for next-generation space exploration.
Application of ‘satellite MIMO technology’:
World’s first: “Satellite MIMO technology” will be put into practical use for “Large-orbit satellites and high-capacity communications between ground stations”.
NTT: Technology that separates multiple signals with different reception timing and frequency errors by interference compensation,
JAXA: Combined low-orbit satellite system design know-how,
Establish low-orbit satellite MIMO technology and contribute to the realization of ultra-high-speed transmission of large-capacity data such as earth observation data.
Future joint research themes:
Optical amplification tech for ultra-high-speed, high-capacity space optical wireless communications
Geostationary and low-orbit intersatellite communications
“Technology for realizing ultra-high speed and large capacity communication (over 100Gbps)” is indispensable for geostationary orbit satellite and ground station communication.
NTT: Phase sensitive amplification, which is ultra-sensitive low-noise optical amplification(LNA * 5),
JAXA: Combined with ultra-high power optical amplification (HPA * 6)
Developed “High-sensitivity optical low-noise amplifier” and established ultra-high-speed, large-capacity space optical wireless communication technology.
This technology enables seamless high-speed and large-capacity communication from space to the ground.
For next-generation satellites: Demo of effects of wireless communication devices
In this joint research,
NTT: InP-HEMT * 7 / HBT * 8 technology,
JAXA: Using satellite-mounted terahertz component technology
“300GHz band power amplifier and low noise amplifier” and “Evaluation of space resistance” will be necessary to establish this technology.
