🚢Hitachi Zosen Completes First Marine Diesel Engine Equipped with SCR System for Japanese Shipyard
Hitachi Zosen Corporation has completed a marine diesel engine equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO Hideshi Shimamoto). This will represent Hitachi Zosen’s first delivery of its kind for a Japanese shipyard.
■Project outline
1. Client: Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd.
2. Shipyard: Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Yokosuka Shipyard
3. Vessel: Aframax tanker x 1 unit
4. System: Marine diesel engine (6G60ME-C9.5) and high-pressure SCR system x 1 set
5. Delivery: May 2018
■Rationale for order
Tier III standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) require an 80% reduction in NOx emissions from newly built ships operating in Emission Control Areas compared to Tier I standards. Having undergone testing in a demonstration vessel, Hitachi Zosen’s marine SCR system is fully compliant with Tier III NOx emission standards. The order suggests that the system was embraced by the environment-conscious shipyard and shipowner.
■Features of Hitachi Zosen marine SCR system
Hitachi Zosen is a licensee of MAN Diesel & Turbo (Germany), the world’s leading provider of marine engines. It is also globally the only manufacturer of both marine diesel engines and catalysts, and through in-house production realizes an ideal balance between optimum engine parts, compactness of catalyst volume, and the performance of catalytic activation.
