Super Doctor: Complete resection with ESD endoscope!

-This is the latest cancer treatment, and it is a common practice in Japan-

Report from the latest article in Sponichi Annex

Forefront of cancer treatment:

A Japanese doctor working in the United States will tell you the latest information from the field.

A  super doctor removes the submucosa and removes the tumor.

The MD Anderson Cancer Center:

the largest center for cancer research in the United States, located in Houston, Texas

Endoscopic treatment in Japan:

Dr. Tsuyoshi Konishi working on treatment.I will explain endoscopic treatment in Japan.

A young white woman diagnosed with rectal cancer was referred to my clinic for a second opinion.

Another hospital doctor noted:
Large rectal cancer requiring radiation therapy and surgery to remove the rectum.
It could be an artificial anus. Indeed, there is a tumor in the rectum that is 3 centimeters or more.
Close observation with a colonoscopy shows that it is an early stage cancer according to Japanese standards.

Takeshi Konishi’s Second Opinion:

It’s big, but it’s early cancer. Instead of radiotherapy or rectal resection, remove the tumor with a colonoscopy first.

The patient had a tumor removed by a Japanese method called ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection).

Results of pathological examination:

It turned out that the cancer was early stage and no further surgery was needed.

The patient recovered without any additional surgery.

Advanced endoscopic treatment “ESD”:

In Japan in the 1990s, ESD was devised to carefully peel off the submucosa and resect large tumors.

The colon wall is only a few millimeters thick. If you make a mistake, it will open a hole.

“Technology to accurately peel off a very thin submucosa” is extremely precise.

Early cancer endoscopic treatment in the United States:
The area where the United States lags behind Japan the most is endoscopic treatment for early-stage cancer.
Small colon polyps can be easily treated by pinching the mucous membrane with an endoscope and excising it.
However, large polyps and early cancers are not treated successfully in this manner
.

Shortage of ESD treating doctors:

Very few doctors in the United States perform ESD. It’s a very special treatment.

MD Anderson’s Cancer Center:
The current situation is that there is no doctor who can do it alone.
We use a model endoscope that is two generations older than the one in Japan.
Cancer treatment in the United States is very advanced. However, Japan is far ahead in endoscopic treatment.

Import of human resources and AI endoscopes in the United States:

Japanese endoscope technology is attracting attention in the United States.

New York’s largest cancer center recently hired a Japanese endoscopist to start ESD.
