Points of development:
World record of large-capacity long-distance transmission with a coupled three-core optical fiber (having the properties of a multimode optical fiber)
Less signal processing load compared to conventional multimode optical fiber, contributing to power savings in transmission systems
Early commercialization of a large-capacity backbone communication system with a standard outside diameter that can be cabled with existing equipment
NICT Network Systems Laboratory / NOKIA Bell Labs
Using a standard outside diameter (0.125 mm) coupling type 3-core optical fiber,
2,040 km performance at 172 terabits per second,
Large capacity and long distance transmission experiments were successful.
This result is 351 petabits per second x km when converted to the product of transmission capacity and distance, which is a general index of transmission capacity.
This is about twice the world record of the new standard diameter optical fiber.
