Japan med; iPS retinal cell transplant surgery: “retinitis pigmentosa”

Intractable eye disease:

Transplant retinal cells made from iPS cells into patients with “retinitis pigmentosa”.

The world’s first surgery was performed by Kobe City Eye Center Hospital.

iPS Retinal Cell Transplant Surgery:

Transform into cells that sense light,
Produce a sheet with a diameter of 1 mm and a thickness of 0.2 mm,
The sheet is transplanted into the patient’s retina.

Kobe Eye Center Hospital:

This photoreceptor transplantation is the first step toward “a treatment method for patients with retinitis pigmentosa that has never been treated before.”

“Retinitis pigmentosa”:

A disease in which the field of vision gradually narrows and blindness may occur.
