AIST:interior and exterior parts of automobiles using wood components – Fiber reinforced with modified lignin

Development point

World’s first trial: Extracted lignin from Japan’s endemic cedar, used as automobile interior and exterior parts

Manufacturing process: Reinforced fiber with modified lignin, and invented manufacturing process

Attached to actual vehicle, starting evaluation test

Overview

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the Chemical Process Research Division, and the Research Group will collaborate with Mitsuoka Motor to develop exterior parts of cars using ingredients of wood and start evaluation tests on actual cars.

Modified lignin extracted from cedar is used as a resin component.

For the first time in the world, we developed ‘Automotive interior and exterior parts made of glass fiber reinforced plastics’
