RIKEN: Developing optical technology to distinguish bacteria in a short time, unstained, non-invasive

RIKEN · Biological Function Science Research Center · Advanced bioimaging research team analyzed light (Raman scattered light) scattered when Escherichia coli was irradiated with laser light.

We confirmed that this Raman scattered light shows different characteristics depending on the difference in drug resistance possessed by Escherichia coli.

By applying this phenomenon, we developed a method to discriminate the type of drug-resistant Escherichia coli in a non-staining, non-invasive, short time, with almost 100% probability.

This research was published in the UK online science magazine “Communications Biology” (July 2 issue).
