Toray: PI material development

Recently, we have developed a polyimide (PI) material suitable for electronic components for millimeter wave radar.

This polyimide (PI) material is used for 5G communication and automatic operation.

5G communication: millimeter wave radar

In 5G communication, in addition to the conventional frequency band of 6 GHz or less, communication in a new frequency band of 20 GHz or more, called the millimeter wave region, is required.

Importance of new technology:

In 5G communication,

Dielectric properties suitable for communication in high frequency bands,

Heat resistance that can withstand semiconductor mounting,

Development of materials that meet physical properties such as adhesion to copper wiring is required.

Conventional technology: Generation of dielectric loss at high frequency

Existing materials such as fluororesin-based and bismaleimide-based materials have problems in the main physical property values required for semiconductors and electronic parts.

Conventional polyimide (PI) materials have problems with dielectric properties.

In order to reduce dielectric loss at high frequencies,

Reducing the polarization in the polymer structure (corresponding to the dielectric constant),
Suppressing the movement of polarization (corresponding to tanδ)

Is the key.

New Technology: Successful development of low dielectric loss PI at high frequency

Making full use of functional PI design technology accumulated over many years,
Pursuing the limits with sophisticated molecular design technology
Succeeded in developing a low dielectric loss PI that reduces electrical energy loss to 0.001 (20 GHz).

Compared to resins with high dielectric properties such as LCP, it has advantages in terms of high heat resistance, mechanical properties, and adhesiveness, and has achieved cost reduction.

Future development plans:

Currently, we are promoting the development of photosensitivity and sheeting based on low dielectric loss PI materials.

If low dielectric loss PI material is applied

Reduce the loss of electrical energy,
Stabilize high-speed communication of large volumes of data
Improved distance measurement performance of millimeter wave radar,
It is possible to downsize parts.
