Japan JAMSTEC: Discovering plastic waste at a depth of 6000m: Survey with Shinkai 6500

Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology: JAMSTEC

JAMSTEC conducted a waste survey from August to September, off the coast of Sagami Bay and off the Boso Peninsula, in order to “clarify the actual state of ocean pollution from plastic waste”.

A hamburger bag 35 years ago was found in the deep sea at a depth of approximately 6000 meters.

Various plastic wastes are found to have accumulated in the deep sea.

JAMSTEC’s survey shows that “in the deep sea it shows that plastic is difficult to break down,” and is under analysis.

Manned submersible research vessel: “Shinkai 6500”

Using the “Shinkai 6500”, we surveyed the seabed at a depth of approximately 6000 meters off the Boso Peninsula.

A plastic hamburger bag marked as manufactured 35 years ago (1984) was found in its original form.
