KHI: a new hydrogen liquefier: Liquefaction at -253 degrees, volume 1/800
Kawasaki Heavy Industries: New hydrogen liquefier
Kawasaki Heavy Industries has started a “demonstration test with a new hydrogen liquefier” at the Harima Plant for commercialization.
Verification test:
The newly developed hydrogen liquefaction machine has improved liquefaction efficiency by about 20% compared to the previous model developed in 2014.
Achieved industry-leading performance.
The demonstration test (liquefaction capacity of about 5 tons / day) will be continued until May 2020.
Hydrogen liquefaction technology:
We have developed a technology to liquefy natural gas at minus 162 degrees for hydrogen storage and transportation.
Hydrogen liquefies at minus 253 degrees, so its volume can be reduced to 1/800.
Focusing on this, we succeeded in developing “Hydrogen liquefaction system based on purely domestically produced technology in 2014”.
The new hydrogen liquefier is cooled by “exchanging the compressed hydrogen gas with the hydrogen cooled in the refrigeration cycle in the liquefier”.
It has the ability to produce about 5 tons of liquefied hydrogen per day.
The liquefaction process has been improved and cost reduction has been achieved by “increasing liquefaction efficiency by approximately 20% and reducing the weight of the main body by 30%”.
In the future, we plan to prepare a lineup of “a system that produces approximately 25 tons of liquefied hydrogen per day”.
