KHI: Selling hydrogen liquefier: 5 tons/day for 1,000 FCVs

Hydrogen Liquefier for the demonstration operation

KHI: Selling hydrogen liquefier: 5 tons/day for 1,000 FCVs

Kawasaki Heavy Industries;

On June 10, it was announced that the hydrogen liquefaction machine will be on sale.

It is a facility that liquefies hydrogen at an extremely low temperature of minus 253 degrees.

It is the first domestic manufacturer to sell a hydrogen liquefaction machine.

Hydrogen liquefier: Performance

The daily production volume of liquid hydrogen is 5 tons.

It is equivalent to the fuel of 1,000 fuel cell vehicles (FCV).

At Kawasaki Heavy Industries/Harima Plant (Harima Town, Hyogo Prefecture), continuous demonstration operation and functional tests were conducted for over 3,000 hours.

Collected various data and confirmed its reliability.

Hydrogen station:

In the future, it will be proposed to hydrogen station operation business and industrial gas companies that use hydrogen.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries is also developing a large storage tank for liquid hydrogen.

Aiming for annual sales of over 100 billion yen for hydrogen related products in the future.

Kawasaki Commences Sales of Hydrogen Liquefier

~ Performance and reliability demonstrated by long-term continuous operation for over 3,000 hours ~

Tokyo, June 10, 2020 –

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.

announced today that it started selling of the hydrogen liquefier which was the first developed by made-in-Japan technologies with industry-leading liquefaction efficiency.

Hydrogen

is a clean energy that does not generate greenhouse gases when used as a fuel for power generation or fuel cell vehicles etc., and is expected to be used about 300,000 tons per year※1 around 2030.

Focusing on the property of hydrogen, which becomes 1/800 in volume by liquefying at minus 253°C, Kawasaki engaged in research and development of liquefaction technology.

The hydrogen liquefier

has demonstrated its performance and reliability through continuous demonstration operation for over 3,000 hours and various functional tests carried out until this spring.

The main features are as follows;

Capability of producing 5 tons of liquefied hydrogen per day (equivalent to 1,000 FCVs’ fuel)

Industry-leading liquefaction efficiency※2, of which key factors are a heat exchange cycle and liquefaction process developed by ourselves utilizing our technology cultivated in the development of high-speed rotating machines such as gas turbines for power generation and jet engines for aircraft

Production of high purity hydrogen at 99.999%※3 and realization of easy maintenance, which have been realized since inclusion of impurities are eliminated in the hydrogen liquefaction process

Compact layout due to the vertical structure of the liquefier (earthquake-resistant design)

Prompt start of liquefaction within 24 hours※4 after start-up of the plant

In addition, Kawasaki has many related technologies such as

storage tanks and transport containers with high heat insulation performance for storing liquefied hydrogen.

It enables to provide engineering and procurement for not only hydrogen liquefier but also hydrogen liquefaction plant.
