South Korea’s LIB Minerals: Heavy Dependence on China!

– 8 minerals essential for manufacturing secondary batteries –

Korean Chamber of Commerce:

On December 15, the report stated:

Of the eight minerals essential to the production of secondary batteries,

In five, South Korea’s dependence on a single exporter is higher than Germany, Japan, and China.

cobalt oxide and hydroxide (83.3%),
manganese sulfate and cobalt sulfate (77.6%),
lithium oxide and lithium hydroxide (81.2%),
lithium carbonate (89.3%),
Nickel sulfate (59%)

Japan’s reliance on a single exporting country

is high in manganese dioxide (92 percent) and natural graphite (91.5 percent).

China’s is 79.1 percent in nickel oxide and nickel hydroxide.

The report is based on 2020 trade data of the United Nations.

As for the reliance on the biggest supply source country,

South Korea’s average is 77.1 percent, higher than those of Japan (66.5 percent), China (60 percent) and Germany (51.1 percent).

As for that on the two biggest,
South Korea’s dependence is over 90 percent in each of the eight minerals whereas the number is five, two and one in the case of Japan, China and Germany, respectively.

For South Korea,
the biggest supply source is China except lithium carbonate (Chile) and nickel sulfate (Finland).

South Korea’s reliance on Chinese battery minerals

is 58.7 percent, followed by Japan (41 percent) and Germany (14.6 percent).

For China, the biggest supply source is Chile, which accounts for 38.3 percent of China’s key battery mineral imports.

South Korea’s reliance on key battery minerals imported from China

rose from 35.6 percent to 58.7 percent from 2010 to 2020.

On average,
exports from the United States and its FTA partners account for 15 percent of South Korea’s imports of the same items.
