South Korean shipbuilders are facing a shortage of workers

South Korean shipbuilders are facing a shortage of workers,

which is attributable to hard work and the past restructuring of the industry.

The shipbuilders are successfully increasing their projects by winning a number of contracts.

However,
the worker shortage for the four quarters of this year is estimated at 3,649, 5,828, 8,280 and 7,513, respectively.

Many are reluctant to join them
because of the restructuring seven years ago.

The number of workers in the industry
more than halved from 202,689 to 92,809 from 2015 to November last year.

Poor working conditions
are another reason why the industry is shunned.

A worker in the industry
is employed by either a shipbuilder or a subcontractor.

The shipbuilder employees are much smaller in number

and the subcontractor employees’ wages are close to the minimum wage despite their extremely high labor intensity.
