Korean Market Watchdog Fines Tesla for Running False Ad

The Fair Trade Commission
announced on Jan. 3 that it slapped a fine of 2.85 billion won on Tesla, Inc. of the United States and its Korean subsidiary Tesla Korea

for running an ad exaggerating the driving distance and charging speeds of Tesla electric vehicles (EVs).

Tesla is accused of making false or exaggerated advertisements

about the driving range of its EVs, the charging performance of its superchargers (fast charging stations exclusively for Tesla models) and the amount of fuel cost savings through its Korean website from Aug. 16, 2019 until recently.

In the case of the Model 3 Long-Range,

Tesla said in an ad that
the vehicle can run more than 446 km on one single charge.

But the truth is that
its low-temperature and city center mileage on a single charge stood at 220.7 km, only half (49.5 percent) of the distance mentioned in the advertisement.

Unlike in Korea, Tesla’s ad in the United States

used the words “up to” in mentioning the maximum distance that can be run on a single charge.

Regarding the advertisement phrase, “Charging with a supercharger takes less than 15 minutes and gives a mileage of 247 km,”

the Korean Fair Trade Commission said,

“We have confirmed that it is difficult for the model to reach the advertised performance in everyday environments,” adding, “There is not enough evidence for the advertisement copy that the model’s fuel cost savings are expected is to reach five million won over the next five years.”
