COVID-19: Nichia to mass-produce LEDs for sterilization: 99.99% inactivated

Nichia:

LED Nichia Corporation announced that it has developed a device that inactivates and sterilizes the new coronavirus by irradiating it with ultraviolet rays.

Under certain conditions, it was demonstrated that it had an inactivating effect of 99.99%, and a mass production system was set up.

Illuminate LED:

By irradiating the LED with deep ultraviolet rays with a short wavelength of light, it has the effect of “damaging the RNA of the virus and weakening the replication of the genome”.

Most effective wavelength:

The wavelength of 260 nm is said to be the most effective.

It was found that the same effect can be obtained even at a wavelength of 280 nm by increasing the light output.

Deep UV LED:

Those with a wavelength of 265 nm have an estimated life of about 2,000 hours.

On the other hand, 280 nm has the advantage of extending the service life by 10 times, which is about 20,000 hours.

Prototype with a wavelength of 280 nm:

We made a prototype with 12 deep UV LEDs lined up in series.

Demonstrated 99/99% inactivation:

We had Nomaguchi, a professor at the University of Tokushima, who specializes in virology, experiment.

As a result, it was demonstrated that the new corona was inactivated by 99.99% when irradiated for 30 seconds with a prototype with a wavelength of 280 nm.

Handy irradiator:

On December 17, the company’s director Kamada held a press conference in Tokushima City.

We are developing a mass production system as the highest level product in the industry.

About the inactivating effect (99.99%) of the deep ultraviolet LED manufactured by SARS-CoV-2

Nichia

The inactivating effect (99.99%) of SARS-CoV-2 was confirmed in an experiment using our 280nm deep ultraviolet LED.

Conducting the experiment

This experiment was conducted by Professor Nomaguchi and Assistant Professor Takaaki Koma, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of Tokushima.

results of the experiment

We have confirmed a 99.99% inactivation effect (Table 1) on the new coronavirus after 30 seconds of UV irradiation.

We evaluated its effectiveness as an alternative disinfection method for the new coronavirus.

Criteria for removal effect

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry judges the effectiveness of the removal effect based on the infection titer reduction rate of 99.99% or more.

What is the recommended bactericidal effect such as hand washing as an infectious disease prevention measure?

・ When hand-washing with running water, about 99% in 15 seconds
・ In the case of rubbing alcohol, 99.99% in 30 seconds

Bactericidal effect of deep ultraviolet LED

It was found that by using a deep ultraviolet LED, a high bactericidal effect can be expected in a short time without any hassle.
