COVID-19: China’s “Trans-Eurasia Logistics” service surges: Belt and Road

International regular freight train connecting countries along the Belt and Road

The number of “Trans-Eurasia Logistics” trains reached 10,180 from January to November 5, 2020.

It surpassed the previous year’s full-year record (8,225) and reached a record high.

International freight train “Trans-Eurasia Logistics”

Freight volume:

It increased by 54% from the same period of the previous year to 927,000 TEU.

Round-trip total:

The cargo loading rate of containers reached 98.3%.

Impact of COVID-19:

Received the spread of the new coronavirus.

The stagnation of air and shipping seems to be due to the increased use of the Trans-Eurasia Logistics as an alternative.

Trans-Eurasia Logistics:

In March 2011, the service started between Chongqing and Duisburg, Germany.

More than 9 years have passed since then.

The number of trains in service has expanded from the initial 17 trains per year to over 10,000 trains (see attached figure).

China shipping items:

Including laptops

Automobile / motorcycle parts,
Communication equipment, machines,
Small appliances, food, pharmaceuticals,

It covers dozens of items such as medical equipment.

Items shipped from Europe:

High value-added products such as finished vehicles and pharmaceuticals are increasing.
