AML / OFAC: Sanctions on North Korean hackers: Cyber attacks worldwide: 20190913
US government:
On September 13, three groups, including the hacker group ‘Lazarus’, run by the North Korean government, were designated as sanctions.
three groups were sanctioned as “ involved in a cyber attack by North Korea”.
They are said to be under the control of North Korea’s external information and crafting agency and the general military reconnaissance agency.
Trump administration:
While positive about resuming the denuclearization talks with North Korea, he showed his attitude to maintain the pressure again.
US Treasury:
Other sanctions designated were ‘Brunorov’ and ‘Andariel’, also known as ‘APT38’.
In addition to freezing US assets, individuals who trade with these groups may be subject to sanctions.
‘Lazarus’ conducted a cyber attack with “WannaCry 2.0” called “Ransomware” in 2017.
Cyber Attack: Damage Status
The damage caused by cyber attacks has spread to 150 countries including Japan.
‘Lazarus’:
Participated in a 2014 cyber attack against Sony US movie company (production of a comedy film depicting North Korean leader assassination).
‘Brunorov’ and ‘Andariel’:
Both stolen about 80 million dollars (about 8.6 billion yen) from Bangladesh Central Bank.
UN report:
North Korea has earned 2 billion dollars (about 216 billion yen) from cyber attacks on banks and virtual currency exchanges, and is using it as a funding source for weapons of mass destruction.
