Nippon Light Metal: New method, synthesis of solid sodium borohydride: Mass production of solid SBH
Nippon Light Metal / National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology
Nippon Light Metal has succeeded in developing a new synthesis method for SBH in collaboration with NIST.
This is a method of “synthesize solid sodium borohydride (SBH)” by “hydrogenation reaction using borax and aluminum”.
This SBH synthesis method:
SBH is a chemical agent with a strong reducing action.
After use, it will become ‘sodium metaborate’.
In addition, it was confirmed through experiments that ‘sodium metaborate’ can be reused as a raw material for new synthetic methods and SBH can be regenerated.
Conventional SBH synthesis method:
Conventional industrial processes use highly reactive and dangerous metallic sodium as the main raw material.
In addition, liquid ammonia is used for purification, making it an expensive drug.
Solid SBH: Development plan
This time, we confirmed that the new manufacturing method developed by Nippon Light Metal can be mass-produced at a lower cost.
In the future, we will establish mass production technology and aim to enter the existing chemical agent market.
Solid SBH is known to have a high hydrogen carrier capacity with a hydrogen generation capacity of 2,400 liters (per kg), and promotes research and development in the hydrogen energy society.
